‘Dunfermline’ Presentation, Epsom Derby, 2022

Jeremy Houghton has worked closely with the Royal Family as Artist in Residence for the Prince of Wales at Highgrove in 2013, followed by a residency at Windsor Castle in 2014 for HM The Queen. This allowed him to observe her passion for horses in formal and military engagements, on the racecourse and also in her private life.

It was a great honour, therefore, to be invited to present a painting of one of her favourite racehorses, Dunfermline at the Epsom Derby as part of the Jubilee celebrations. The Queen described Dunfermline as ‘her best horse ever who won just about everything’ in the 70’s. Commissioned as a gift, Houghton felt under pressure to get every detail just right, as the Queen knew the horse so well!

Described by King Charles III as ‘the Queen’s favourite young artist,’ it was a proud moment for the artist and a great tribute to the nation. The painting now hangs in Sandringham House.
