Artist in Residence Giffords Circus, 2024 & 2023

In the run-up to the 25th anniversary of Giffords Circus in 2025, Jeremy Houghton is delighted to be once again the Artist in Residence for this unique circus with cult status in the Cotswolds and beyond. Cherished by so many as a quintessentially English highlight of the summer season, Jeremy is excited to literally lift the curtain and get behind the scenes of the iconic institution.

Houghton will be celebrating his 2024 residency for Giffords Circus with a series of Pop-Up exhibitions throughout the season called ‘Cowboys Never Say Goodbye’. in support of Maggie’s Cancer Centres.  This one-off collection of limited edition prints and paintings by the renowned British artist captures the magic and spirit of the Circus ‘so much more than a Circus’ and a flavour of our journey to medieval Avalon.

He will be welcoming visitors to the Circus Sauce Tent where his Pop-Up gallery will be installed on the following dates; from 5.30pm – 7.30pm on

13th May at Sudeley Castle

15th July at Stonor Park in Henley-upon-Thames co-hosted with Lord Camoy

12th August on picturesque Minchinhampton Common

and in a Special Finale Exhibition in the Big Top on

11th September from 6pm – 8pm at Stratton Meadows in Cirencester.

A long-time fan of the show, Houghton brings his own sense of playfulness to the party, painting a collection of contemporary and vibrant paintings, timeless prints with a smattering of witty keepsake merchandise for you to treasure long after the tents are packed up and gone.

Known for his residencies in royal and historic houses, and at equestrian, military and sporting events, this project poses an altogether different kind of nosiness! This time, Jeremy can literally lift the curtain and get behind the scenes, observing and sketching all kinds of characters – with or without their masks. Part of the joy and challenge of creating a body of work is to document not only the highly choreographed and glossy end result but the many hours of rehearsals, the laughter, frustration and tears. It is these intimate moments that really fascinate the artist and result in a truly unique collection.

Cherished by so many as a quintessentially English highlight of the summer season, Giffords Circus has cult status and is simply unmissable. In the run-up to the 25th anniversary in 2025, Houghton considers it a great privilege to be part of their story, and in particular, to raise money for their chosen charity, Maggie’s Cancer Centres, an organisation that supported founder Nell Gifford in the last months of her life and other individuals and families who are facing cancer. This sentiment chimes with the title of the collection, ‘Cowboys Never Say Goodbye’ as we doth our cap to members of the team who are no longer with us, performing with other troupes or in other countries – we will see you again!

Please join Jeremy Houghton at his Pop-Up exhibitions and Spread the Love.

The collection is now available to view and purchase online at Houghton Art Gallery and will be on display in the gallery from October – December 2024.
